Giannis Says Farewell to Bucks, Fans Left Devastated

NBA Star Giannis Antetokounmpo announced his departure from the Milwaukee Bucks earlier this week. The four-time all-star abruptly ended his tenure with the Bucks following the suspension of the basketball season, a move made in response to the domestic breakout of the coronavirus. The beloved superstar started his career at the age of 18. In his rookie season, many questioned the scrawny player’s talent and skill. The Milwaukee coaching staff, however, saw extraordinary potential in the kid fresh out of Athens, Greece. Giannis quickly proved to have an unmatched work ethic, improving incredibly in subsequent years. During the past three years, Giannis asserted himself as a generational talent, taking the small-market team from a laughing stock to title favorites. The MVP that was beloved by basketball fans worldwide abruptly announced his departure from the team, leaving Bucks fans with high hopes of a title devastated.

On March 11, the NBA suspended play indefinitely after center Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz tested positive for the coronavirus. The game, which was hosted in Oklahoma City, was called off just before tip-off after a team doctor rushed onto the court and informed officials that Gobert’s test result came back positive. In an unprecedented move, NBA commissioner Adam Silver acquiesced in putting the league in an indefinite hiatus. Other sports and leagues followed in the steps of the NBA, and the entire sports world shut down in a matter of days. The suspension of the basketball season came at an unfortunate time with the playoffs just around the corner. The rest of the season is in question, and the notion of a lost season without a champion remains a possibility.

The incredible depth and talent on the Bucks were responsible for Giannis’ reduced workload. With a team that was stacked top to bottom with talent, Giannis used his developed leadership to unify the team and lead it to many successes. Antetokounmpo also posted a historic player efficiency rating, a statistic that is symbolic of his dominance in the paint. Last season, Giannis led the bucks into the Eastern Conference Finals, a stage many teams envy. The team has led the league in wins and overall record in each of the past two seasons. With the rest of the NBA season in question, Giannis made the decision to leave Milwaukee, feeling he fulfilled his promise that he would build the team to a championship level. He has not announced where he will sign in free agency, but Antetokounmpo is strongly considering pairing up with his friend Stephen Curry and joining the Golden State Warriors. With hopes of a long-lost title left in pieces, Bucks fans can only reminisce of the time they enjoyed with a truly historic player.
