Urinetown Cast Interviews

Memorial Theatre Company will be presenting Urinetown as their winter musical this year. Performances will take place during the first two weekends of February. Here are a couple interviews with our wonderful lead cast members. Enjoy!

Cast Member: Lucas Koch

Grade: Senior

Who do you play in Urinetown?

I’m Officer Lockstock, I’m basically an omniscient cop, which sounds creepy, but he’s the narrator

What is your favorite thing about your character?

He’s a dork. Think Alan Alda.

Who is the funniest cast member?

Matthew Berthoud.

Have you participated in other Memorial Productions?

Oh absolutely. Head puppeteer in Little Shop of Horrors and Mr. Bernstein in Curtains.

Why should people come see the show?

You know, not only is this hilarious show, but it says something about society. This show might change your life.

Cast Member:  Jillian Sytsma

Grade: Sophomore

Who do you play in Urinetown?

Penelope Pennywise. Owns the only toilet in town. Very loud. She says what’s on her mind and she’s very in charge.

What is your favorite thing about your character?

I like her songs, because they show a lot of empowerment.

Who is the funniest cast member?

Lucas Koch.

Have you participated in other Memorial Productions?

Shrek last year. I played the dragon.

Why should people come see the show?

People should see it because it’s funny! It’s very different and weird, but you end up enjoying it, and that’s what makes a good musical.

Cast Member:  Libby Pleva

Grade: Sophomore

Who do you play in Urinetown?

I play Hope Cladwell. She’s the daughter of a corporate-executive who creates a program that forces poorer citizens to pay to use public restrooms. However, she falls in love with a man [Bobby] who leads a rebellion against her father.

What is your favorite thing about your character?

I love how Hope is unapologetically herself no matter the circumstances. It’s hard to speak up with conviction, especially if people may hate you for it.

Who is the funniest cast member?

Definitely Artúr Siklos.

Have you participated in other Memorial Productions?

Yes, I was in Shrek last year.

Why should people come see the show?

People should come see the show because it’s a deep story that predicts what society will become if we’re not careful about the choices we make everyday. But it balances artistic depth with quite a lot of humor.

Cast Member: Matthew Berthoud

Grade: Junior

Who do you play in Urinetown?

I play the wonderful Caldwell B. Cladwell. He’s just a big CEO of a scary corporation that makes people pay to go to the bathroom.

He’s not just a villain, there is complexity to him. He loves his daughter but hates everything else sometimes.

Who is the funniest cast member?

Lucas Koch.

Have you participated in other Memorial Productions?

I was in Shrek last year. I played Donkey.

Why should people come see the show?

Well, you know, it’ll be a good time. It’s kinda weird, but also funny.

Cast Member:  Felicity Klingele

Grade: Junior

Who do you play in Urinetown?

Little Sally, who is a glorified narrator.

What is your favorite thing about your character?

She gets to be loud and obnoxious.

Who is the funniest cast member?

Lucas Koch

Have you participated in other Memorial Productions?

Yes, I was in Our Town and Shrek

Why should people come see the show?

Because it’s extremely funny and interesting. Come support your fellow JMM students.

Cast Member:  Emmit Thom

Grade: Sophomore

Who do you play in Urinetown?

I play Officer Barrel, who is the second police officer, and he just kind of follows Lockstock around.

What is your favorite thing about your character?

I like that my character is always trying to prove himself and show everyone he can do it, and the way he goes about that is amusing.

Who is the funniest cast member?

Chayton Marquis.

Have you participated in other Memorial Productions?

I have. I participated in Shrek last year and the fall play last year as well.

Why should people come see the show?

People should come because it’s kind of a comedic take on real world problems and connects to a lot of things in society today, but does it in a way that gives you a laugh, so if that’s what you’re looking for you should definitely come.

Cast Member: Brodde Peterson

Grade: Junior

Who do you play in Urinetown?

Bobby Strong.

What is your favorite thing about your character?

He gets to sing a lot, but he’s kinda just the guy that everyone likes, and it’s fun to play that.

Who is the funniest cast member?

Lucas Koch

Have you participated in other Memorial Productions?

Yeah, I did Curtains my freshmen year and Shrek last year.

Why should people come see the show?

Because we have and we are working very hard on it, and you should all come out and see our hard work!
