On October 27th, Democratic Representative Katie Hill announced her resignation from Congress. Hill, a representative from California, had admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with a member of her campaign staff before being elected into office which is in violation of House rules. Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement that Hill made a great contribution, however, integrity must be maintained in Congress and all workplaces. Hill has also emphasized the fact that she will pursue legal action against whoever publicized her explicit photographs. She has accused Kenny Heslap, her husband of nine years, of leaking the photos, claiming he was wanting to embarrass her.
Before Congress, Hill was the executive director of a non-profit group in the LA area assisting the homeless. She won by 9 percentage points and won a district that has been historically Republican. She went on to join the House Armed Service Committee and became the Vice Chair of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform. More recently, she has stayed in the public eye by making controversial statements on Twitter about various topics. In her parting statement to Congress, Hill said “To every young person who saw themselves and their dreams reflected in me, I’m sorry … and to every little girl who looked up to me, I hope that one day you can forgive me. The mistakes I made and the people I’ve hurt that led to this moment will haunt me for the rest of my life, and I have to come to terms with that.”
