JMM Gender Equity Association Update

The Gender Equity Association has been up to a bunch in November and early December! We are celebrating and learning more about women and gender-non-conforming people in media, and how they are portrayed in politics. To start off, we watched the award-winning documentary Miss Representation to analyze how movies, television, and advertisements portray women, and what we as feminists can do to change it! We also Facetimed with the wonderful journalist, Mia Warren, and learned about her endeavours as a woman of color in communications, and tribulations she has faced in the field. We also met with a Middleton Administrator Lara Romine to speak about encouraging voter registration, and fighting voter apathy for the sake of gender equity! To finish off November, we met with the LGBTQ+ Coordinator for the Madison Metropolitan School District and spoke all about how to make Memorial and the MMSD a safer space for transgender, gender non-conforming, and queer youth!

To start off December, we are studying women and gender expansive people in the healthcare industry, and how we can further gender equality when it comes to medicine. A representative from Planned Parenthood will be visiting, we will run the annual Pad & Tampon drive, and learn more about women of color when it comes to gaining access to healthcare. Interested in coming to our meetings? Join us on Tuesdays and Thursdays during lunch in room 804! Have any questions? Feel free to reach out to us at jmmgenderequity@gmail.com, or shoot an email to our Co-Presidents Maggie Di Sanza (mgdisanza@madison.k12.wi.us) or Melanie Golden (megolden@madison.k12.wi.us)! Can’t wait to see you there!
