Artist of the Month: Sam Baeseman

What art classes have you taken at JMM?

I have taken every drawing, painting, and ceramics class offered at JMM, and now I’m a TA for drawing and ceramics.

Which has been your favorite?

I’m evenly split between Drawing 3 or Ceramics 3. Both were wonderful classes, full of assignments that helped me not only improve my skills as an artist, but challenged me creatively and helped me think more critically about producing art.

How long have you been creating art?

I first started drawing in 7th grade, but I wasn’t particularly passionate about making art until sophomore year.

Why do you create art?

When I started it was strictly me being competitive and wanting to be better than one of my friends, but I now do it as a way to take fun and wacky ideas and fully visualize them in the real world. It

What is your favorite medium to work with and why?

My favorite medium right now is watercolor, because of the amount of detail and vibrance you can get out of it, but clay is always great too because of how intricate and dynamic you can make things look using it.

Advice to other artists?

Have fun with what you’re doing, be open to change with what you’re making, and be alright with goofing up a lot.

What is one type of art you’d like to learn in the future?

Inking is a medium that has so much more to it than I can do right now, so I’d love to get better with it in the future.

What are your plans for after high school?

College is still up in the air for me, but after college I would like to either teach art or be hired as an artist for a game/book company.
