According to mirrormirror.org, an eating disorder website, the average onset age for eating disorders is 17. This is an age that you have just reached or are about to reach in a year or two. In this time, it is very important to note that the main cause of eating disorders is due to negative body image and poor self esteem. Eating disorders can result in many consequences such as malnutrition, heart problems, and even suicide. With this in mind, it is critical to seek help if you notice yourself, or a peer, developing symptoms of different eating patterns or a withdrawal from activities involving friends/family. It’s necessary to take precautions ahead of time because once eating disorders are contracted, there is no true recovery. It becomes a lifelong process of attending counseling sessions and getting monitored. If you or someone you know is struggling with an eating disorder, call the National Eating Disorder helpline at (800)-931-2237 to help get through this tough time.
