August 31st was the first home football game of the season for the Spartans, who faced Madison East. After coming off a big win at Janesville Parker the week before, they were ready to prove to their loyal fans that they could do it again. Senior quarterback Joe Ferguson ran for three touchdowns, while also throwing three more in the air—all before the halftime whistle blew. Star receiver Jester Weah, a senior, caught four passes and scored a touchdown.
After halftime their lead was so large that none of Memorial’s starters saw any playing time. Backup quarterback Brandon Toman took over the reins and passed for a touchdown, while rushing for two more scores on the ground. At the end of the fourth quarter, the score was 67 to 6, with the Spartans
routing the Purgolders to improve to 2-0. The team looks to prepare for this Friday’s huge game against Big 8 rival West High School.
